The Thames is teeming with over 125 different species of fish including trout, plaice, bass, haddock, roach and eels.Water quality in the Thames has improved drastically since the 1950s and fishing is now commonplace in the estuary with more 200 commercial fishing trawlers on the river. Water quality is continuously improving with plans for the Thames Tideway Tunnel which will drastically reduce sewage overflows into the Thames. The Thames Estuary Partnership (TEP) is working with DEFRA and the Environment Agency on the Your Tidal Thames programme to improve and promote water quality in the Thames. TEP also works with a network of commercial fisheries and regulators.
